Butterflies are beautiful insects in the family lepidopteran group, commonly known as butterflies, with the exception of some large species of tropical butterflies which are not true butterflies. Many modern butterflies are hybrids, arising from an existing species with a few marked differences; the result being that the modern butterfly is greatly different from its ancestral forms. Butterflies are nocturnal migratory creatures, moving about on exposed leaves or trees in search of food and water. At night they rest indoors in houses and buildings, feeding on the fruits and leaves of both plants and trees.

A butterfly’s movement is totally dependent upon the arrangement of its wings. It cannot fly in a straight line without crossing over some parts of its body. Thus the exact position of a butterfly’s wings on its body can be a very little reliable, and very much variable. Most of the time, if a butterfly wishes to move, it must change its position, for example, when it goes down to lay eggs, or when it wants to mate.

A storm is a severe thunderstorm, with wind and heavy rain usually occurring during a full-fledged storm. The caterpillars are particularly vulnerable to the effects of a storm, being unable to move away from their cocoons, or spend the night outside. When a storm approaches, many butterflies become active at once and hurry to cover loose rocks or other pieces of vegetation which will provide them with protection from the wind and rain. Other butterflies like the storm chasers seem to be less concerned about life and more interested in dancing around in circles.

If you see a storm chasing a butterfly, do not worry too much. The butterfly itself is not harmed by a storm; however, other nearby animals and even humans can be seriously hurt if they come into contact with the storm-chasers. Watch the direction that the storm is going, as this can be a good indicator of whether it will hit the butterfly or not. It is possible for the butterfly to fly through a storm without being hit, but most do not survive the experience. It is important to note that most butterflies won’t fly when the storm gets closer to land; only those that are in a “flight” tend to survive.

While not directly hurting the butterflies, the powerful wind can cause damage to objects nearby, such as trees, houses, or cars. If you have a garden, or are planning on owning one in the near future, consider enclosing it with a strong fence, to keep the storm chaser from destroying it. If you are in a place where there isn’t a fence, make sure to put something, such as netting or plastic around your garden, so that no flying butterflies get through. Even if the butterfly does not hit the object, the strong winds can create large amounts of debris that can damage nearby items.

Although butterflies are not generally considered “vampires”, they are vital to the health of humans. Without butterflies, we would not have many tree-swinging, butterfly houses, and we would not have the amazing array of colors and species that exist today. To stop a storm chaser, or any other wild critter, from harming butterflies, be sure to call a local wildlife control company, or even call your local National Park Service about the area. If you are not sure about the area, take a picture (good quality, of course), and send it to them.
