Brown is an attractive, warm, earthy color that lends itself to both casual and formal wear. It can be used to make clothing accessories and home decor, but it also works well with other colors. There are a number of warm shades from which to choose, including chocolate, creme, ecru, fawn, light orange, honey, magenta, mauve, orange, pewter, rose, sienna, sand, and walnut. Here are some ways brown can be worn and incorporated into your wardrobe.

Brown can be a warm, complimentary shade against either tanned or unsaturated skin. Brown can be used very lightly, as in the mixed tones, or very heavily, as in the hue known as burnt orange. In the CMYK coloring model employed in print or painting, brown combines black and red, or red and black, with yellow, blue, or green as the main primary colors. In the RGB coloring model utilized to create colors on computer monitors and television screens, brown combines red and green, or orange and yellow, with white as the main secondary color.

The most commonly used shade for textiles is brown. In wool textiles, the pile usually bears only one dominant color, while in cashmere, the color brown dominates almost every single fiber. In cotton textiles, brown adds warmth, while in silk, it adds a beautiful sheen. In tapestries, brown adds a richness that sets it apart from other colors, especially gold-based hues. Brown is also an excellent choice for creating background colors in paintings and photography, using it in place of gold-toned tones, such as cream and gold, which create a washed out appearance. Brown’s pigment is more even, so it works well with all different types of backgrounds.

The mixing of primary colors can be carried further into the tints and shades of brown. The biggest difference between a hue known as “obvious” and one that is “not obvious” comes from the way the hue appears as a light color when illuminated. In the first type of shade, which is blackened, the contrast between the dark color and the white light is very pronounced, making the two colors seem to pop against each other. In the second type of shade, the contrast is not as great, but the overall effect is still striking because the lighter color mixes with the white. A third variety, called a pale brownish shade, consists of pure white, whereas a fourth variety, known as the pure brown, consists of very light shades of brown.

There are a number of ways to mix browns, but when you make browns work together with other colors, the resulting hues tend to be complementary rather than confusing. To make browns complement their neighbors, start by mixing the primary colors together. Two tones of red or orange can be combined with one tone of blue for an exciting look that evokes the look of burnt orange or the warmth of a caramel pie. You could also add a third color to the mix, like a very pale pink. This would provide a fresh and refreshing twist on the burnt orange color, while still maintaining the rich structure of brown.

If you’re interested in adding some interest to your brown, then you may want to choose some of these interesting hues to mix and match. If you prefer to keep things simple, then consider mixing some purples with browns. One of the best things about purples is that they have a slightly cooler, less vivid appearance than most of the other colors of brown, so they pair beautifully with the rich, intense browns. Pinkish tints of brown can be exciting when used in complimentary combinations with some purples, but you can also choose to make each tint stand alone if you’d rather go with just one color, though the combination of all three will make the final result look even more dynamic and unique.
